The Short Duddon starts and finishes behind the Newfield Inn and takes in Dow Crag, White Pike and Caw. It’s only short or easy compared to the long race, of which it is roughly the second half. It’s a more navigational race than the long, through places that people rarely visit on purpose, and most people are lost for at least some of the way.
The race route follows round the back of the Newfield then after the fell gate it heads up into the wilderness beneath Caw. From there it contours in various ways through the old mine workings to a stiff climb up Dow Crag. From there it shares the long race route along the Walna Scar, off White Pike and across the mosses to Caw. Coming off Caw the route is flagged from the ladder stile to the finish.
