Black Combe
Black Combe is a tough race for its distance, with a long second climb and usually quite a lot of late winter weather. Registration is in Silecroft village hall from 10am and the start is at midday in a field nearby. Entry is £7 on the day and includes pie and peas. One day I will get round to organising a barrel of beer too.

Black Combe Dash
The Black Combe Dash is a special race introduced for the 2021 English Fell Championships. It has all the features you love in the usual Black Combe race – endless springy climb, long fast descent, amazing views, sudden clag, navigational comedy – packed into a shorter route with a bit less snow and a lot more bracken.
Caw
The Caw race is a quiet evening out-and-back. It starts at 7.15pm from the Blacksmiths in Broughton Mills and follows the Dunnerdale route up the Knott, but instead of continuing up Raven Crag it contours right to head towards Caw. It comes back the same way – for most! – and you must visit the Knott checkpoint on the return leg too. Entry is outside the pub on the day.

Duddon Valley Long/Short
The Long Duddon is a classic fell race covering 18 miles around the head of the Duddon Valley with 6000ft of climb over Harter, Hardknott, Little Stand, Swirl How, Dow Crag, White Pike and Caw. The Short Duddon is run at the same time over a 10 mile course with 3000 feet of climb up Dow and Caw. Both are category A fell races so navigational ability, proper kit and some idea of what you’re doing are all essential.
Both races start near The Newfield Inn, Seathwaite, 11am (long) 11:30 (short).

Dark Side of the Combe
This race is part of the Black Combe Country Fair from the showground in Bootle, this is a really popular show with more than 3000 attending in 2015. The route heads through farmland onto the fell, up and down Black Combe and back the same way. The downhill should be fast and great fun, possibly rivalling the last downhill of the March Black Combe race. The race is free entry, following the £5 entry on the day to the show. There will also be a junior/novice race of about 7km and 180m climb, with a minimum age of 14.
Eskdale Show
Fell races have featured at Eskdale Show since 1875 and remain a popular attraction for competitors and spectators alike. The length of the course varies according to the classes and it takes in the fantastic fells surrounding the valley. The start and finish is on the show field – the last challenge being a beck that has to be crossed before the final sprint to the finish. Some competitors choose to spectacularly jump the beck whilst others run through it.
Dunnerdale
The race starts and finishes near Broughton Mills Village Hall (GR 222 906) at 12:00. Changing Facilities available in Village Hall. Please arrive early and follow marshals’ instructions on parking: you may have to park some way from the Village Hall.

Kirkby Moor
Kirkby is a fast local race over rolling moorland: a mixture of heather, sheep tracks and these days the access tracks for the windmills. It’s not that high or steep, and a good race for beginners, but some parts are still quite tough and the moor can be confusing in the November fog. The start is at Beckside at 11am, and registration is in the village hall from about 9.30.
